On August 9, 2013, President Obama signed into law the "Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act of 2013". The act promotes small hydroelectric and conduit hydropower projects, authorizes FERC to extend preliminary permit periods, and promotes hydropower development at nonpowered dams and closed-loop pumped storage projects. The Commission's responsibilities include: Issuance of licenses for the construction of a new project; Issuance of licenses for the continuance of an existing project (relicensing); and Oversight of all ongoing project operations, including dam safety inspections and environmental monitoring.
