The act promotes small hydroelectric and conduit hydropower projects, authorizes FERC to extend preliminary permit periods, and promotes hydropower development at nonpowered dams and closed-loop pumped storage projects. The Commission's responsibilities include: Issuance of licenses for the construction of a new project; Issuance of licenses for the continuance of an existing project (relicensing); and Oversight of all ongoing project operations, including dam safety inspections and environmental monitoring.
