Statement Regarding the Commission’s Approval of the Venture Global Calcasieu Pass LNG Export Facility

Today, for the first time in over two years, the Commission approved the construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility pursuant to our statutory duties. The Venture Global Calcasieu Pass LNG Export Facility is another step in the American energy renaissance that will benefit American workers, our economy, and our friends and allies throughout the world. With this order, the Commission has demonstrated it can come together and approve infrastructure projects in accordance with the law and in an environmentally responsible manner.

This important accomplishment would not have been possible without the leadership of Chairman Chatterjee. The Chairman clearly understands the value of developing energy infrastructure in a responsible manner, and he knows the significance of LNG exports not only as an economic engine but also a geopolitical asset. I also appreciate Commissioner LaFleur’s support for this project. Of course, the contributions, hard work and dedication of the Commission staff cannot be overstated.

Finally, I think it is important to recognize that the Commission seriously considered—and took a hard look at—all of the potential environmental impacts from the project, including climate change. Disagreeing about how to consider those potential impacts does not mean that we ignored them or failed to give them thoughtful consideration.
