Introduction
On February 24, 2026, FERC staff approved Algonquin Gas Transmission, LLC (Algonquin) request to enter into FERC’s Pre-filing Environmental Review Process (Pre-filing Process) for the planned Algonquin AGT Enhancement Project). More information may be found in FERC Docket NoPF26-7-000 in FERC's eLibrary. Please note that the project has not been approved at this time.
Project Name Route and Facilities
Algonquin plans to construct and operate three interstate natural gas transmission pipeline segments totaling approximately 13.5 miles of pipeline and associated facilities in and parallel to existing Algonquin easements in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Specifically, Algonquin plans to replace, in the same easement, about 8.25 miles of existing 16-inch-diameter pipeline with 36-inch-diameter pipeline in Norfolk and Worcester counties Massachusetts and Providence County, Rhode Island.
Algonquin also plans to install about 2.2 miles of 12-inch-diameter pipeline parallel to an existing pipeline (looping pipeline) in Newport County, Rhode Island; and 3.0 miles of 36-inch-diameter looping pipeline in Providence County, Rhode Island. Lastly, Algonquin plans to increase compression, through certain software upgrades, at its existing Cromwell Compressor Station in Middlesex County, Connecticut. According to AGT, these facilities would increase gas supply to local distribution companies and enhance energy reliability in the Northeast.

Pre-filing Environmental Review Process
Pre-filing is a “pre-application” phase in the overall environmental review process for interstate natural gas or liquefied natural gas projects under FERC’s jurisdiction. The Pre-filing Process is designed to identify and address environmental aspects of the project before an official application is filed. The Pre-filing Process was established to encourage early involvement by stakeholders during the design and/or routing of an interstate natural gas project.
During the Pre-filing Process, members of the public will have multiple opportunities to get involved and express their views, concerns, and issues. Those opportunities include public comment periods, applicant-sponsored open houses, and scoping sessions hosted by FERC. These opportunities will be posted in FERC’s eLibrary in Docket No. PF26-7-000.
Public Participation Opportunities
Federal law requires FERC to seek out public comments and consider them during its review of a project. Public comments inform FERC’s reviews and serve to educate decision-makers about local concerns.
Open Houses
During the Pre-filing Process, members of the public will have several opportunities to express their views, concerns, and issues with the project. The first of those opportunities are Open Houses held by Algonquin between April 22 - April 30, 2026.
