FERC Chairman Mark Christie announced today that the Commission will host a Commissioner-led technical conference to explore the challenges of resource adequacy in regional transmission organization and independent system operator regions. The two-day technical conference will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, and Thursday, June 5, 2025, at FERC headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Issues to be explored at the technical conference may include: current and impending risks to resource adequacy; the efficiency and effectiveness of capacity markets in ensuring resource adequacy at a just and reasonable costs; design and performance comparisons between capacity markets and alternative resource adequacy constructs; and states’ desired role in managing resource adequacy.
“For years I have been warning that rising demand forecasts and the failure to retain existing generators or build adequate new power generation is threatening resource adequacy and the reliability of our power grid,” Chairman Christie said. “I look forward to addressing this important topic with my colleagues and others who can contribute important information and give their views on how we move forward on this critically important issue.”
Today’s announcement comes as the United States faces increasing resource adequacy challenges, driven by the nation’s growing demand for reliable electricity, an increasing risk of resource retirements, and the changing resource mix of the bulk electric power system.
A supplemental notice will be issued prior to the conference with further details. Information will also be posted on the Calendar of Events on the Commission’s website, www.ferc.gov, prior to the event.
