Basic Requirements for Internship Appointments

 

GRADE

LEVEL OF EDUCATION

GS-4

Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

GS-5

Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

GS-7

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the *Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

GS-9

Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

GS-11

For research positions, completion of all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree. For non-research positions, completion of all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree.

 

Additional Educational Requirements for Internship Appointments:

*Superior Academic Achievement- Must meet one of the following: (1) Upper third of graduating class, (2) GPA of 3.0 or higher based on four years of education or courses in the final two years OR GPA of 3.5 or higher in required major courses or required major courses in the final two years (3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

099 Series- Student Trainee (Environmental Protection)- No additional educational requirements

0199 Series- Student Trainee (Economics)- Must have or be pursuing a degree in economics that includes 21 semester hours of economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus

0299 Series- Student Trainee (Human Resources)- No additional educational requirements  

0399 Series- Student Trainee (Management Analysis)- No additional educational requirements

0599 Series- Student Trainee (Accounting/Auditing)- Must have or be pursuing a degree in accounting or related field such as business administration, finance or public administration that includes 24 semester hours of accounting, which may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law

0899 Series- Student Trainee (Engineering)- Must have or be pursuing an engineering degree from a school of engineering with a least one program accredited by ABET

0999 Series- Student Trainee (Legal)- Completion of the second year of law school by time of appointment for the GS-9

1199 Series- Student Trainee (Energy Industry Analysis) and Student Trainee (Contracting)- No additional educational requirements

1399 Series- Student Trainee (Geology)- Must have or be pursuing a degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography

2299 Series- Student Trainee (IT/Data Management) and Student Trainee (Cyber Security)- Must have or be pursuing a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaption of applications, systems or networks
